  • Dress code and photos before you go → rules

Capuchin Crypt Tours and Tickets

Every tour here visits the same Museum and Crypt of the Capuchin Friars on Via Veneto, and most give you about 60 minutes inside. What separates them is who talks to you in the crypt, a live guide or the museum audio guide, and whether a catacomb, a coach transfer, an after-hours slot or a concert is added. Read the card before booking, because some options leave the crypt out.

Live Guide or Audio Guide Inside the Crypt

The museum audio guide comes with every ticket, and most tours use it inside the crypt. Some tours keep a live guide at your side instead, and the difference is worth checking before you book.

What the Museum Allows

The Capuchin museum lists its own guided visit, booked by email at least one week ahead, costing $100.61 (€90) by bank transfer or $106.20 (€95) by PayPal on top of the entry tickets. Radio headsets are compulsory and the group is capped at 10 people. A group arriving with its own licensed guide follows the same rules: maximum 10 people, headsets compulsory, booked by email one week ahead, with no extra fee.

Tours with a Live Guide Inside

These listings put a live guide next to you inside the crypts, within the museum's 10-person cap:

- Capuchin Crypt Small-Group Tour with Private Option: guided inside by a licensed English-speaking guide, 45 minutes, $44, group up to 10. - Capuchin Crypt Semi-Private Guided Tour: guided inside with skip-the-line tickets, 60 minutes, $44.48, group of 10 max. - Dark Past Walking Tour with Capuchin Crypt Ticket: guided inside with ticket and headset, 30 minutes in the crypt, $73, group up to 8. - Capuchin Crypt Guided Tour with Skip-the-Line Entry: live English guide or audio guide depending on the option booked, $22, up to 10 people. - Capuchin Crypt and Museum Ticket with Guide or Audio Option: English live guide if you select that option, $21. - Capuchin Bone Crypts Express Tour in English: live guide outside, with some sections inside enhanced by the audio guide, $34. - Private Family Catacombs and Capuchin Crypt Tour for Kids: guided by the private family guide, $353.54.

Tours with the Audio Guide Inside

These tours hand you the museum audio guide inside the crypt, and the live guide speaks outside or on the transfers:

- Capuchin Crypt and Catacombs Tour with Coach Transfers - Capuchin Crypt Entry Ticket with Audio Guide - Catacombs and Capuchin Crypt Tour with Van Transfer - Catacombs Tour with Transfer and Capuchin Crypt Option - After-Hours Capuchin Crypt and Priscilla Catacombs Tour - After-Hours Catacombs Tour with Capuchin Crypt and Transport - Capuchin Crypt and Dark Secrets of Rome Walking Tour - Capuchin Crypt Tour with a Sacred Music Concert

The audio guide suits travellers who want their own pace. A full visit takes about 60 minutes, and you can linger in one bone chapel or move on early.

Capuchin Crypt and Catacombs Tours: Which Catacomb You See

A combo tour adds a catacomb outside the centre, reached by coach or van transfer. Which catacomb you enter depends on the weekday, because each one closes a different day.

Catacomb Closing Days

The four catacombs near Rome keep different hours and each shuts one weekday, so the same tour can enter a different underground site depending on the day you book. Figures come from the catacombs' official pages.

Which Tour Goes Where

- Capuchin Crypt and Catacombs Tour with Coach Transfers: the crypt and museum with the museum audio guide, then a coach to a Roman catacomb and the Basilica of San Martino ai Monti, $55, 2.5-3.5 hours. - Catacombs and Capuchin Crypt Tour with Van Transfer: a catacomb of St. Callixtus, St. Sebastian or Domitilla depending on opening days, with a van transfer, $62, 2.5-3.5 hours. The Capuchin Crypt is only in some options, so pick one that lists it at checkout. - Catacombs Tour with Transfer and Capuchin Crypt Option: Catacombs of Callixtus except Wednesdays, or Domitilla on Wednesdays, $44, 2-4 hours. The Capuchin Crypt is an optional audio-guide upgrade, and if you do both the same day the earliest crypt entry is 14:45. - After-Hours Capuchin Crypt and Priscilla Catacombs Tour: the Catacombs of Priscilla after hours by coach, $55, 2.5 hours. - After-Hours Catacombs Tour with Capuchin Crypt and Transport: Priscilla normally, San Sebastiano when Priscilla is closed, with crypt entry at closing time, $124.45, 3 hours. - Private Family Catacombs and Capuchin Crypt Tour for Kids: two Christian burial grounds by private driver, site names not stated, $353.54, 2.5 hours.

Annual Closures

Each catacomb also closes for a stretch each year. The Catacombs of St. Sebastian close 7-27 December. The Catacombs of St. Callixtus close 13 January to 10 February.

The Catacombs of Priscilla close 11 January to 1 February. Book a combo tour outside those windows if the catacomb matters to you.

Capuchin Crypt or Catacombs: Which to Choose

The Capuchin Crypt and the catacombs are both burial places, but they are different visits. The crypt is a 30-metre corridor in central Rome seen in about 60 minutes, and the catacombs are early Christian tunnels outside the centre.

How the Two Visits Differ

The table sets the two side by side, using the museum's own figures for the crypt and the official catacomb sites for the catacombs. Prices are the full adult tickets.

Doing Both in One Day

A combo tour solves the transfer. The Capuchin Crypt and Catacombs Tour with Coach Transfers at $55 and the Catacombs and Capuchin Crypt Tour with Van Transfer at $62 drive you from Via Veneto to a catacomb and back into the city. On your own, plan the crypt for one half of the day and the catacomb for the other, since St. Callixtus and Domitilla close from 12:00 to 14:00.

What You See Inside the Capuchin Crypt

The museum comes first, then a corridor about 30 metres long with six rooms holding the remains of about 3,700 people, mostly Capuchin friars.

The Six Rooms

The crypt is one corridor of about 30 metres flanked by six rooms, each decorated with the bones of friars. The museum dates the decoration to the 18th and 19th centuries and credits it to Capuchin friars. The names below are the official English names printed by the museum, and each room pairs the bones with a religious scene.

RoomWhat you see
Crypt of the ResurrectionEnds with a canvas of the raising of Lazarus
Mass ChapelAltar painting by Jan Francois Courtois, Mary with the Child and the souls in purgatory
Crypt of the SkullsWalls arranged with skull bones
Crypt of the PelvisesPelvis bones set into the decoration
Crypt of the Leg Bones and Thigh BonesTibia and femur bones in patterns
Crypt of the Three SkeletonsThree young skeletons and a central figure, probably a Barberini princess, holding a scythe and scales

The Museum Before the Crypt

The visit starts on the first floor of the convent, in a museum with eight exhibition rooms that opened in 2012. The convent itself was built from 1626 under Pope Urban VIII of the Barberini family, and the friars moved in on 16 April 1631. One room is devoted to Saint Francis in Meditation, attributed to Caravaggio and dated 1600-1610.

The museum itself says experts are divided, and some consider it a contemporary copy of an original kept in Carpineto Romano. One ticket covers the museum and the crypt together, and the crypt cannot be visited alone.

The Soil and the Message

The museum notes the tradition that the soil of the friars' cemetery is holy earth brought from Palestine or even Jerusalem. Wikipedia records a placard in five languages with the message of the whole crypt: what you are now we used to be, what we are now you will be.

The point of the six rooms is that line. The friars meant the bones as a reminder that every visitor ends the same way, which is why the visit is quiet and short, about 60 minutes with the museum.

Where to Stay Near the Capuchin Crypt

The crypt sits on Via Veneto, a short walk from Piazza Barberini, so a room in this part of central Rome puts the museum door, the tour meeting points and metro line A at Barberini within reach. The coach combos also start from Piazza Barberini.

Capuchin Crypt Tickets, Prices and Opening Hours

Capuchin Crypt tickets cost $11.18 (€10) full price with the audio guide included, and one ticket covers both the Capuchin museum and the crypt. The desk sells them on the day, and the museum opens every day.

Ticket Prices

These are the Capuchin museum's own prices for the Museum and Crypt of the Capuchin Friars. Every ticket includes the audio guide, and the online booking fee is charged per ticket.

TicketPriceWho it is for
Full ticket with audio guide$11.18 (€10)All adult visitors
Reduced ticket with audio guide$7.27 (€6.50)Ages 7-17, over 65, students with ID, FAI members, licensed international guides, members of Catholic religious orders
Group reduced ticket with audio guide$8.38 (€7.50)Groups of 10 or more
Free entry$0Children up to 6 inclusive, no booking needed
Free entry$0Visitors with disabilities and one companion, showing documentation at the desk
Online booking fee$1.68 (€1.50) per ticketEvery ticket bought online

Opening Hours

The museum and crypt open every day in two blocks: 09:30-13:30 (last entry 12:30) and 14:30-18:30 (last entry 17:30). Full closing days are Easter Sunday, 25 December and 1 January. On Easter Saturday, 2 November, 24 December and 31 December the museum closes early at 13:30, with last entry at 12:30.

Visitors who arrive after closing are refused, even with a valid ticket. A full visit takes about 60 minutes.

What the Ticket Does Not Do

The ticket is single-entry and covers museum and crypt together, so there is no crypt-only ticket. Tickets cannot be refunded, resold or used on another date. The museum refuses Roma Pass, Turbo Pass, Mic Card and ICOM. Payment at the desk works in cash or any credit card.

The tours on this page include this same entry ticket. The cheapest is the Capuchin Crypt Entry Ticket with Audio Guide at $10.45, and the Capuchin Crypt and Museum Ticket with Guide or Audio Option at $21 adds a live guide or audio option.

Source: Capuchin Crypt Museum.

Visiting the Capuchin Crypt with Kids

Children are welcome at the Capuchin Crypt, and the museum asks only that minors go in with an adult. Children up to 6 enter free and ages 7 to 17 pay the reduced $7.27 (€6.50).

What Children Pay and Need

The museum ticket is free for children up to 6 inclusive and reduced to $7.27 (€6.50) from 7 to 17, both with the audio guide. Strollers are admitted to the museum, which sits on the first floor and is reached by lift. The crypt itself has three low steps and no ramp, so plan to carry a small child or fold the stroller for the six rooms.

The whole visit takes about 60 minutes. That is short enough for most children, and the corridor is only about 30 metres long, so a child who wants to leave early is never far from the exit.

Which Tours Suit Families

The Private Family Catacombs and Capuchin Crypt Tour for Kids at $353.54 is built for children, with English activity booklets for ages 5 to 10, hotel pickup and a private driver between the sites. For a cheaper visit, the Capuchin Crypt Entry Ticket with Audio Guide at $10.45 lets a family move at its own pace.

Check the age line on any guided listing before booking. The Capuchin Bone Crypts Express Tour in English says it is not suitable for children under 10.

Where Is the Capuchin Crypt

The address is Via Vittorio Veneto 27, 00187 Roma, under the church of Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini. Turismo Roma places the museum a short walk from Piazza Barberini.

Where Tours Meet

Meeting points differ by tour, so read the card before you set out. Several crypt tours meet right at the door at Via Vittorio Veneto 27, as the guided skip-the-line tour and the small-group tour do. The dark secrets walk meets a few doors along at Via Vittorio Veneto 19, and the bone crypts express tour starts on Piazza Barberini. The coach combo gathers in the centre of Piazza Barberini by the Triton fountain, at the Barberini stop of metro line A, and can end elsewhere in the city.

The concert visit uses a different door: the entrance of the Capuchin convent at Via Veneto 21, with admission from 16:15 to 16:40.

The Honest Small Print

Every Capuchin Crypt tour has limits. Here they are before you pay.

  • On the Catacombs and Capuchin Crypt Tour with Van Transfer the crypt is not in the standard group or express option. Pick an option that lists it.
  • On the Catacombs Tour with Transfer and Capuchin Crypt Option the crypt is an add-on, and on the same day the earliest crypt entry is 14:45.
  • Most tours give you the museum audio guide inside the crypt. The live guide talks outside or on the transfer.
  • Shoulders and legs must be covered to the knee to enter the crypt.
  • The museum's own ticket cannot be refunded or moved to another date, and Roma Pass is refused.
  • The crypt has three low steps and no ramp, and motorised wheelchairs are not allowed.

Dos and Don'ts at the Capuchin Crypt

Do

  • Do cover shoulders and knees before you arrive, because the museum's dress code requires shoulders and legs covered to the knee and visitors can be refused entry.
  • Do arrive before the last entry time, 12:30 for the morning session and 17:30 for the afternoon, because visitors arriving after closing cannot enter even with a valid ticket.
  • Do check which option includes the crypt when booking a combo, because on some catacombs tours the Capuchin Crypt is an optional or excluded add-on.
  • Do check the catacomb closing day before a combined tour, because the Catacombs of St. Callixtus close on Wednesdays, Domitilla on Tuesdays, and St. Sebastian and Priscilla on Mondays.

Don't

  • Don't bring a large bag, because large bags and suitcases must go in the free lockers and only a bottle of water is allowed inside.
  • Don't count on Roma Pass or similar cards, because the museum explicitly refuses ICOM, Mic Card, Roma Pass and Turbo Pass.
  • Don't expect a refund on the museum's own ticket, because tickets cannot be refunded, resold or used on another date.
  • Don't publish your photos without authorisation, because photos are allowed for private non-profit use only and publication needs FEC authorisation.

Everything Else Worth Knowing

Capuchin Crypt Dress Code, Photos and Rules

The dress code for entering the Capuchin Crypts is shoulders and legs covered to the knee, printed by the museum itself. Plan your clothes before a day that also takes in churches or a catacomb.

Photos

Photos and video are allowed for private, non-profit use only. Publication or commercial use needs authorisation from the Fondo Edifici di Culto, the FEC. Guides may not use digital devices inside.

Many travellers expect a ban, but for a personal camera or phone the museum rules allow shots of the bone rooms. During the sacred music concert photos are allowed without flash and video is not.

Bags and Lockers

Large bags and suitcases must go in the free lockers at the entrance. Only a bottle of water is allowed inside, with no food or other drink. Travel light if you can, because the locker stop adds time to a visit that already runs about 60 minutes.

Access and Children

The museum sits on the first floor of the convent and is reached by lift, so its rooms are step-free. The crypt itself has three low steps and no ramp. Wheelchair access is possible with a companion, but motorised wheelchairs are not allowed.

Strollers are admitted to the museum. Visitors with disabilities and one companion enter free without booking, showing documentation at the desk. Crypt entry is recommended for minors accompanied by an adult, and children up to 6 inclusive enter free with no booking needed.

Is the Capuchin Crypt Worth Visiting?

Yes for most travellers: the full museum and crypt visit takes about 60 minutes, the museum's own ticket is $11.18 (€10) with the audio guide included, the site is open every day, and it sits a short walk from Piazza Barberini. That is a small amount of time for one of the most distinctive rooms in Rome.

How Long It Takes

The museum says a full visit takes about 60 minutes, covering the eight museum rooms and the six crypt rooms. Guided Capuchin Crypt tours run from 45 minutes for the small-group crypt visit to 3 hours for the after-hours catacombs and crypt tour. Most crypt-only formats land between 45 minutes and 1 hour, so you can fit one into any morning or afternoon.

Who May Skip It

Anyone upset by human remains should skip it, because the decoration is made from the bones of about 3,700 people. The museum also warns that the crypt has three low steps, and motorised wheelchairs are not allowed inside. Tours such as the express visit and the semi-private visit are listed as unsuitable for wheelchair users.

Pair It With

The church above, Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini, holds Guido Reni's Saint Michael the Archangel and is open Mon-Sat 07:00-19:00 and Sunday 08:00-19:00. For more underground Rome, a catacombs tour adds an early Christian burial ground, with closing days to watch: the Catacombs of St. Callixtus shut on Wednesdays, the Catacombs of Domitilla on Tuesdays, and the Catacombs of St. Sebastian and the Catacombs of Priscilla on Mondays. For a city-level dark history, the dark secrets walking tour or the dark past walk pair the crypt with Trevi, the Pantheon and Piazza Navona.
